Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
