The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.
"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.
He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
